Asparagus Near Giveaway, Plus More

A friend contacted me today to let me know that fresh asparagus (conventional, but it almost always is) is only 99 cents a pound right now at the Sprouts store in Longmont.  I called the Sprouts on Arapahoe here, and evidently this is only in Longmont, lucky folks.

Also, no word yet about any customary one-day sale tomorrow at Whole Foods.  One might still come up, as they've been tending to mention it quite late in the day on Tuesdays, but on the day before Thanksgiving, who needs any added grocery shopping concerns.  Also, a warning that the parking lot at the Pearl Street store was already a complete zoo yesterday.  For the sake of sanity, I'll make any last minute purchases tomorrow at the Superior store, which has always managed to stay reasonably calm on the day before Thanksgiving.

Spectacular Asparagus Sale Coming Up

I stopped in at the new Lucky's Market in Longmont this afternoon to pick up a few things and noticed a rather vast, but unpriced, display of asparagus, presumably conventional.  When the produce guy checked on the price for me, he came back with the information that today, it's $4.99 a pound, but the display is prepping for tomorrow's new weekly sale, when it will be a stunning 88 cents a pound.  Sorry I have no clue if this will pertain to the Lucky's in Boulder also, and I just don't have time to do further investigation.

One-Day Sale At Whole Foods Tomorrow

Our local Whole Foods stores will offer us a duo of special sales for tomorrow only, the 8th.  I usually resign myself to conventional asparagus, given the rarity and sky high price that usually comes with organic, but this $2.99 a pound price for organic will make me jump on it.  And while I haven't tried Theo chocolate bars, that's certainly looking like a splendid price.  Here are the details from them:

Fresh Asparagus Price Smackdown

Here's the lowdown on prices I'm aware of for asparagus around Boulder. All were seen yesterday, with the exception of King Soopers, which I still need to get to. In alphabetical order, as always:

King Soopers: organic asparagus advertised at $2.50 a pound with card (don't know their conventional price),

Sprouts: conventional asparagus $1.88 a pound,

Sunflower: conventional asparagus $1.99 a pound,

Whole Foods (seen at Pearl Street store): conventional asparagus $3.99 a pound, organic asparagus $4.99 a pound.

Although I don't get there often, you can see from these prices what a stunning deal King Soopers has on organic asparagus through Tuesday.

New Sale Prices Are Up

Highlights of today's new sale prices for our local Sprouts and Sunflower groceries are up on the left, along with Whole Foods' longer lasting sale and a link to Vitamin Cottage's very long lasting sale. This week's big news about food you really want to eat ironically isn't happening at any of those places; it's at King Soopers, where organic asparagus can be had for $2.50 a pound, and first of the season fresh halibut is $16.99 a pound (both presumably with card). Back to news from our natural stores, Sprouts has 30% off their entire bulk cheese department, while Sunflower is doing 50% off all chicken. Look to the left for more specials.

With asparagus on sale starting today at Sunflower for $1.27 a pound, in a bit of an ironic twist, the Whole Foods blog recently listed some excellent ideas for using it with their post, Ten Ways to Enjoy Asparagus.

Start Thinking Spring

Just a heads up that Sunflower will have fresh asparagus for $1.27 a pound with the sale that will start tomorrow. Don't yet know what Sprouts will tempt us with in tomorrow's sales. So with today's snow continuing to linger over Boulder, start thinking about spring dishes. And Happy Mardi Gras!

Fresh Asparagus for a Steal!

Thank you, thank you Ms. A. for clueing me in that Lucky's Market has asparagus for 88 cents a pound this week. Lucky's isn't really on my radar because its north Boulder location is pretty far for me. Also, they've never had their new ad posted on the Wednesday mornings I've checked - wish they'd post it earlier. It's up now, and you can see all their sales for this week here.
