Whole Foods Has Figs!

Long-time readers (thank you!) know that I border on fanatical about fresh organic figs, and I've just gotten my hands on the first I've seen of the season at the Pearl Street Whole Foods.  At $4.99 for an eight ounce container, they're a little pricey, but wrapped in thin pancetta and skewered on the grill, they're worth every penny.  Those little pleasures in life - gotta grab them!

My Kingdom For A Fig

I was deliriously happy when the first figs of the season appeared at the Pearl Street Whole Foods a week or two ago.  With grilled salmon planned for tonight, I stopped by Whole Foods this afternoon to get more figs to wrap in pancetta and toss on the grill that will be going, but woe is me, they had none (figs, not pancetta).  The produce guy said they've only been getting sporadic small shipments, and the cashier told me they've been out of stock for a week.  I'm in fig withdrawal!

Figs Are Here!!!

I had my first fig sighting of the year at the Pearl Street Whole Foods yesterday.  They were black missions (I didn't even notice whether organic or conventional), selling for about $8.99 a pound, rather high, but the first arrivals.  There's nothing better than a fig wrapped in pancetta, grilled outside until the pancetta crisps, yum.

Figs!

Readers from last year might remember I'm a little fig-crazy. So I'm very excited to report that I had my first fresh organic fig sighting (and buying, of course) of the season yesterday at the Pearl Street Whole Foods store. There is nothing better than a fresh fig wrapped in a thin slice of pancetta then skewered and grilled. It's a perfect appetizer, or even a savory dessert, for your 4th of July grilling weekend.

Organic Figs, a Whale of a Sale

Never mind the sale Sunflower has this week on organic fresh figs at $2.99 for an 8 oz package. The Pearl Street Whole Foods store has fresh organic figs for $2.99 a pound! (Through 9/7.) Since the sale isn't in the regional flyer, there's no guarantee you'll find the same price at other local Whole Foods stores, but it often happens. Wrap them in pancetta from the Whole Foods meat/cheese deli counter and put them on the grill. Heaven.

Another Grilled Fresh Fig Idea

We've been consuming grilled pancetta-wrapped figs as often as our local stores have managed to have the figs in stock. Now the current issue of Bon Appetit has another intriguing idea: a dessert cheese platter consisting of grilled fresh fig halves accompanied by grilled bread slices, assorted cheeses, and maybe some honey, nuts, and dried fruit. Sounds like a dessert fit for a feast. BTW, the Pearl Street Whole Foods store had fresh brown figs in stock today, and selling for $5.99/lb, a better price than Sunflower's advertised sale price of $3.99 for an 8 oz container. Although, come to think of it, the ones at Sunflower are organic, and I don't believe the ones at Whole Foods were.

Today's Fresh Fig Report

Who knew it would be so difficult to indulge in my penchant for grilled pancetta-wrapped figs? Sunflower had out-of-stocked on figs yesterday, although the produce guy said they expected to have more this morning (I'd call first if that's the primary thing you're looking for). I managed to find some yesterday afternoon at the Superior Whole Foods, but there were very few on display, and I suspect that's all they had. The Pearl Street Whole Foods store remains out of stock today, so that's been awhile. Have we all discovered fresh figs simultaneously, causing a rush similar to that for Copper River salmon?

I'm in Fig Withdrawal

Here I am, eagerly anticipating a long weekend of hedonistically chowing down on a plenitude of grilled pancetta-wrapped figs, and Whole Foods, at least at the Pearl Street store, is sold out of figs! Probably more widespread than the one store, as the guy in produce told me that their supplier is out of them. I might need to move on to bacon-wrapped dates, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Fresh Fig Sighting!

Yahoo, yahoo, I've seen my first fresh figs of the season at Whole Foods, both the Pearl Street and Superior stores. Last year, I was introduced to what has to be one of the greatest foodstuffs in the world, grilled pancetta-wrapped figs. Its name says it all; just wrap a fresh fig (maybe cut in half if it's big) in pancetta, skewer it, and grill until the pancetta is done. Eat before, during, or after a meal, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, as often as you can.
