National CSA Sign-Up Day

I've just discovered that today is National CSA Sign-Up Day, what a great idea to promote supporting your local farming community. I got set weeks ago with Red Wagon Organic Farm - I just loved our first try with them last year. Fabulous organic produce offered with several days and locations to choose from as you sign up, and a biweekly option to boot. I especially enjoyed being challenged by some offerings like fava beans that need two layers of shelling, kohlrabi, that alien veggie I'd never previously tackled, and edamame as they come from the farm, not from a bag in the freezer. I was almost disappointed that Red Wagon offers optional choices for those not wanting to take on the challenges - I didn't cave, and went full steam into personally uncharted territory. Looking forward to this year's CSA!

Last Call For Restaurant Week

Just a reminder that Denver Restaurant Week, including several fine options in Boulder, concludes tomorrow, March 1st (spring is within sight!!!). Multi-course dinners are $30, and you can view the restaurants' special menus on the Denver Restaurant Week website. Stay warm today, more light snow this afternoon into tomorrow, as if we needed any more.

Weekend Sales At Whole Foods

Our local Whole Foods stores will offer us a nice sale for tomorrow only, plus a trio of sales lasting through Sunday. For tomorrow only, tilapia will be $2 off at $7.99 a pound, and we all know how good Whole Foods' fish is. For tomorrow through Sunday, Amazing Grass Raw Reserve will be half off at $19.99 each (not familiar with it), very good Uniekaas Parrano cheese will be $5 off at $11.99 a pound, and Back to Nature crackers will be great at $2 a box, half off.

And good heavens, watch those roads out there. They are already talking about more snow to start again this afternoon, when it hasn't even stopped yet at my house.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have new sales starting today at our Boulder Sprouts and Whole Foods stores. I suspect Vitamin Cottage may have switched from their lengthy sales lasting six weeks or so to small weekly ones, and if that's the case, I'm afraid I just don't have time to follow yet another store every week. In any case, here's what's looking good to me now.

In Sprouts' new sale through March 4th, value packs of boneless skinless chicken breasts are $1.99 a pound, baby back ribs are $2.99 a pound, fresh farmed Atlantic salmon fillets are $5.99 a pound, their stuffed chicken breasts are $3.99 a pound, grill packs of Rosie organic chicken are $3.49 a pound, and there's a fresh sausage bonanza, with all bulk $2.99 a pound and all links $3.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, some Earthbound Farm salads are BOGO, Braeburn and red delicious apples are both 98 cents a pound, one pound clamshells of strawberries are just $2.98 each (think spring while the snow continues to fly!), celery bunches or red bell peppers are just 98 cents each, broccoli is $1.50 a pound, grape tomatoes are $2.50 a pint, and green curly kale or red chard are both $1.50 a bunch. Elsewhere in the store, the big news is a big BOGO sale, with lots of items buy one get one free. Items I'm seeing that appeal to me include Cascadian Farm cereal, 15 ounce Westbrae organic beans, Newman's Own fig Newmans, Odwalla juice, Voskos Greek yogurt, and Eat Well hummus (all saying "select varieties").

Meanwhile, Whole Foods' new sale through March 10th has me enthused about several items, most particularly select varieties of my favorite Imagine organic chicken broths for just $2 a box, yahoo! Pineapples with the Whole Trade pedigree are $2.98 each, and organic cluster tomatoes are $3.98 a pound. Their very good fresh Icelandic cod is worth $12.99 a pound, $3 off, while poblano pepper jack salmon burgers are $3.99 each. Bella Terra organic San Marzano tomatoes are $3.50 a can (not specified but that should be the big one), which offers opportunities for the Whole Creamery fresh ovoline mozzarella at $3.99 for 12 ounces. Their own Two Bite desserts are $4.49 a tub which is only 50 cents off, but any time they put those front and center, it's a temptation, plus they might be sampling them. Finally, my favorite liquid hand soaps for the kitchen, Mrs. Meyers, are $3.99 each, $1.50 off, and while I'm not familiar with it, Weleda Skin Food is a whopping half off at $9.99 each.

Epoisses Is Off My Bucket List

I've mentioned how much fun I'm having with Mimi Sheraton's new book, 1000 Foods to Eat before You Die. I could be quoting from practically every page, but there's one (actually two) that I just can't resist. One of her entries is for Epoisses de Bourgogne, a delicious cheese I had the opportunity of trying several years ago in Beaune during a tour of the Burgundy wine area. I'm glad I enjoyed it before reading her description, since although she says that tasting it is "to cross over to the other side," she also calls it "not for the faint of palate" with a "distinctive barnyard smell." Heck, I just thought it was delicious. On that same trip, I also had pigeon for dinner (it sounds far more appealing when said with a French accent), and since that also gets an entry from Mimi, that's two I can cross off my culinary bucket list.

No Cacio Di Roma At Whole Foods

Bummer. It seems Whole Foods has dropped Cacio di Roma from its cheese selections, at least at the Pearl Street store (and if Pearl doesn't have it, it's going to be hard to find it anywhere else on the planet, excluding Italy of course). Cacio di Roma is key to making Mario Batali's bavette cacio e pepe pasta dish at home, as I'd planned to do tonight. I bought some extra Parmigiano Reggiano as a sub, but I'm pretty sure it will be disappointing. Oh well, at least the snow is melting out there, before more comes in on Wednesday.

Restaurant Week In Progress

A reminder that the previously mentioned Denver Restaurant Week, that includes several marvelous Boulder locations, is now in progress through March 1st. Multi-course dinners for $30, with all the details here. Tonight certainly doesn't look like a great time to venture out in the snow, but it's a good time to peruse menus and make reservations.

Taking Care This Weekend

Good morning, Boulder, as the snow starts to fly. If you haven't yet stocked up for the storm, it looks like you have a small window remaining to *very carefully* get your groceries in before the snow gets truly serious. Channel 9 is predicting 17.4 inches for Boulder by the time this thing wraps up. I'm set, with a beautiful organic chicken from Whole Foods' remarkable sale yesterday. It will be roasted along with some winter veggies like sweet potato, leeks, parsnips and the like tonight. For tomorrow, everything's in the house for corn and green chile chowder from the Food Network, drawing on my stock of roasted chiles in the freezer from last fall. Be careful out there.

Food Fit For The Oscars

With the Academy Awards coming up quickly this Sunday, Epicurious has you covered with its Oscar Night Eats if you'd like to celebrate with award-winning food and drink. In a week including Mardi Gras and Lunar New Year, both right after Valentine's Day, I think I'll just roast my organic chicken from Whole Foods' one-day sale today (see the post below) instead.

Weekend Sales At Whole Foods

Our local Whole Foods stores will offer us a fabulous sale for tomorrow only, plus a trio of sales running tomorrow through Sunday. For tomorrow only, organic whole fryer chickens will be $1.99 a pound, 47% off. With considerable snow expected this weekend, a roasted chicken and veggie dinner sounds like just the ticket. Also, tomorrow through Sunday, Sumo Mandarins will be $2.98 a pound, Garden of Life organic plant protein will be $10 off at $19.99, and Suja Elements (whatever they are, and ditto for the plant protein) will be half off at two for $5.

P.S. Happy Lunar New Year.

Bon Appetit Spins Fifty Shades

Leave it to Bon Appetit to come up with a "Kitchen Edition" appropriate to Fifty Shades of Grey. They say "we've gathered up our favorite recipes that call for a little twine, a bit of strength, and some serious pounding," all to be found here. Oh, and no safe word required.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have a new sale starting today at our Boulder Sprouts stores, while the current one continues at Whole Foods through February 24th. Here's what's looking good to me now.

Sprouts will be doing another 72 hour sale this Friday through Sunday (but beware the snow predicted for Saturday into Sunday), where their bulk coffee at $6.99 a pound looks very good to me, but the other things advertised, like conventional grapes and blackberries, or chicken legs or drumsticks (just 79 cents a pound for those) generally don't go on my list.

In Sprouts' regular sale through February 25th, they are doing a Seafood Spectacular (welcome to Lent) on generally previously frozen fish, including Alaskan cod fillets $6.99 a pound, and Alaskan sockeye salmon fillets or 26/30 count raw shrimp $7.99 a pound. Any size package of boneless skinless chicken breasts is $2.99 a pound, their very good stuffed chicken breasts are $3.99 a pound, and three types of chicken sausage (green chile, parmesan or spinach feta) are also $3.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, celery is just 99 cents a bunch, butternut squash or roma tomatoes are 99 cents a pound (stunning price for the romas), grape tomatoes are $2.50 a pint, curly green kale and one pound bags of baby carrots are both $1.50 each, broccoli is $1.50 a pound, and Fuji, Gala or Granny Smith apples are all $1.50 a pound. Elsewhere in the store, some Brown Cow yogurts are quite low at 69 cents each, some Alexia potatoes are BOGO, and with Lunar New Year tomorrow, there are several Asian specials, including a line drive of 40% off all Annie Chun's products. Finally, 12-packs of Seventh Generation bath tissue are $5.99 each, which is nearly half off.

And with their double ad Wednesdays, don't forget today is the last day of Sprouts' sale on conventional asparagus for just 99 cents a pound.

1000 Foods To Eat Before You Die

I am just loving Mimi Sheraton's new book, 1000 Foods To Eat Before You Die. Talk about a bucket list (although I'm proud of having a few I can already scratch off). Sheraton was the New York Times dining critic for a number of years way back, and her writing is informed, opinionated, and sometimes hilarious. Her book is a glorious combination of a lifetime of food experience, travel, restaurant and vendor recommendations, with some world history as it influences culinary traditions thrown in to boot. I expected to peruse it quickly, but find myself enjoying it word by word, and wanting to dog ear practically every page.

Happy Fat Tuesday

Well, happy Mardi Gras, and I hope you've avoided those king cakes loaded with nasty colorings  In any case here's Food and Wine's take on what to do today:  http://www.foodandwine.com/mardi-gras-recipes

Mardi Gras Tomorrow

Happy snowy Presidents' Day, Boulder. Not exactly a big culinary holiday, cherry pie being about as far as one could stretch it, although Thomas Jefferson was quite the gourmand, could be some opportunity there even though his birthday is not one of the two being celebrated. But tomorrow we have Mardi Gras. so look quite a few posts down for the guides I posted about that. In this house, dinner will be Creole chicken and ham fried rice from Food and Wine magazine. Remember to wear your purple, green and gold, and laissez les bons temps rouler!

Chinese New Year Coming Up

Whew, we've gotten through Valentine's Day, still have Mardi Gras to do this Tuesday (look a few posts down for those guides), and then there's Chinese New Year this Thursday, the 19th. Saveur magazine offers you A Feast for Chinese New Year, and since Lunar New Year also ties into this, Epicurious offers A Taste of Lunar New Year beyond China, exploring cuisines of Korea and Vietnam, although I'm not sure if the celebration days are identical.

Saturday, February 14, 2015

Happy Valentine's Day!

And if you *still* haven't figured out what's for dinner, here's a reminder of the guides I posted awhile ago.

Alfalfa's Valentine's Sales

Alfalfa's in Boulder and Louisville has a number of sales for us this special weekend (happy Friday the 13th!). For today only, antibiotic-free rib eye steaks are $12.99 a pound, and at the Boulder store, all red wine over $20 is 20% off. Tomorrow only, a 10 stem tulip bunch will be $10.99, and all body care will be 20% off, while today through Sunday sockeye salmon will be $9.99 a pound. The ad says "wind caught from Alaska," so I think they meant wild, unless yet a more sustainable fishing method has been discovered.

Alfalfa's Sweetheart BOGO Brunch

To make it a Valentine's weekend, the Boulder Alfalfa's will be offering a BOGO brunch this Sunday, the 15th, from 9 to noon. Buy one brunch get one free is quite a deal. Update - Alfalfa's website says the Louisville store is doing one too, that one listed as 7 to noon.

Reminder Re Tonight's CSA Fair

As previously mentioned, there will be a big CSA fair tonight at Chautauqua, a great place to explore your options if you are wondering if a CSA is right for you, and if so, which one. Here are the details from the Boulder Farmers' Market.

CSA Fair Thursday Feb. 12, 5-7pm in Boulder
First 50 guests win a half-dozen farm fresh eggs from Jodar Farms

Mark your calendars to join us for the CSA Fair next week at the *Chautauqua Community House in Boulder on Thursdayevening, February 12th from 5-7pmVisit with 12 Boulder County Farmers Markets vendors (listed below) and learn about your options for community supported agriculture shares this year-everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to eggs, meat, flowers, wine, and even preserved Colorado produce. Learn about what local farmers and producers are doing now to get ready for the growing season, and how your support with a CSA share will directly support their efforts.

If you are one of the first 50 guests, you'll win a free half-dozen fresh eggs from Jodar Farms. And of course, it wouldn't be a farmers market event without some snacks and drinks! Three Leaf Catering will generously be providing a few treats for us.

Participating vendors: Jodar Farms, Aspen Moon Farm, Ollin Farms, Pastures of Plenty, Deep Nutrition Farm, Ela Family Farms, Red Wagon Organic Farm, Natural Homestead Beef, Dew Farms, Kilt Farm, Plowshares Community Farm, BookCliff Vineyards and MM Local Foods.

*Directions to the Community House: Head west on Baseline Road from Broadway. Turn left (south) onto 12th Street, and we recommend the parking lot on your right by the tennis court and playground, before you get to the Chautauqua Auditorium. All parking surrounding Chautauqua Park is City of Boulder and open for grabs. If that parking lot, along with the park lot is full, there are spaces in the cottage neighborhood and on the south side of Baseline Road. The Community House, a beige building with stone, is on Morning Glory Road, just west of the Auditorium and southwest of the Dining Hall. Here is a map of the Chautauqua area

More Whole Foods Three Day Sales

To further complicate things about all the previously reported sales (look just below) lasting one day, three days, or four days, our local Whole Food stores are also doing a trio of sales for tomorrow through through the 15th. Theo's heart-shaped peanut butter cups will be four for $5, Forager Project juice will be 50% off, no price specified, and in a lovely tip to Valentine's Day, all lip care and color will be 25% off. As they say, say it with a kiss.

Three Day Sale At Whole Foods

In addition to the previously mentioned rose sale starting today at Whole Foods, they're also doing a three day sale on lobster tails for $7.99 each, $4 off, for today through Valentine's Day. Posting doesn't specify size, but Whole Foods' lobster tails are always yummy and from New England or Canada.

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

Four-Day Sale At Whole Foods

For today through the 14th, dry aged New York strip steaks will be 20% off at $19.99 a pound. They'll be very fine steaks, but that's still a fair sum for those of us who aren't big beef eaters.

One-Day Sale At Whole Foods Today

For today only, Cocopotamus truffles (whatever they are, but I bet they're yummy) are two for $2 at Whole Foods. Sorry for the late notice, crazy day.

Reminder Re Rose Sale

A reminder that tomorrow through Valentine's Day, Whole Trade roses will be two dozen for $20 at Whole Foods, $10 off.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have new sales starting today at both our Boulder Sprouts and Whole Foods stores. Here's a really quick look at what's looking good to me now.

At Sprouts through February 18th, the hot news to me is conventional asparagus all the way down to 99 cents a pound. Asparagus is one of the few veggies I find myself buying in conventional instead of organic, and it doesn't get lower than that. In meat and fish, chicken breast tenders are $1.99 a pound, and value pack isn't mentioned, five ounce lobster tails are $5.99 each, ground chicken, pork, or chicken breast are all $2.99 a pound, farmed fresh salmon fillets are $8.99 a pound, and in steaks, grass-fed boneless ribeyes or New Yorks are $10.99 a pound, while natural filet mignon is $13.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, celery is $1.50 a bunch, one pound bags of baby carrots are $1.50 a bag, Braeburn and red delicious apples are both 99 cents a pound, broccoli is $1.50 a pound, curly green kale, and red or rainbow chard are all $1.50 a bunch, grape tomatoes are $2.50 a pint, and blackberries are $2.99 for a 5.6 ounce container. Elsewhere in the store I'm liking Chobani Greek yogurts $1 each, the big 28 ounce size cans of Muir Glen organic tomatoes for just $1.50 each, and a Mega Omega Sale at 25% off omegas.

In Whole Foods' new sale through February 24th, I'm liking Pine Manor split air-chilled chicken breasts for $3.99 a pound, American Homestead boneless pork shoulder roast also $3.99 a pound, chicken cordon blue $5.99 a pound, and while the slimy things don't appeal to me personally, live oysters are $1 each, and they'll shuck them for free. Organic green kale is $1.50 a bunch, and organic Cara Cara oranges are $1.68 a pound, but for conventional asparagus, I'd head to Sprouts this week, as Whole Foods' sale price is two and a half times as much at $2.48 a pound. Udi's gluten free pizzas are $2.40 off at $5.99 each, Whole Creamery mozzarella ciliegene look good at $3 for eight ounces, and Ford Farm Seaside cheddar is $4 off at $9.99 a pound.

Getting Ready For Mardi Gras

We haven't gotten through Valentine's Day yet, but it's also time to start thinking about how to laissez les bons temps rouler, with Mardi Gras coming up on the 17th, just a week from tomorrow. If you are looking for a little culinary inspiration, here are a few guides to help you out (and I'll definitely pass on the king cake): Recipes for Mardi Gras from Epicurious, Classic Mardi Gras Recipes from Saveur magazine, and F & W's Ultimate Guide to Mardi Gras from Food and Wine magazine.

Rose Sale Coming Up

Advance notice that Whole Foods will be doing a fabulous sale on their Whole Trade roses leading up to Valentine's Day. From the 12th through the 14th, they will be two dozen for $20, $10 off. Too bad the family pets in my household would view the placement of a vase of roses as the arrival of breakfast.

Friday, February 6, 2015

Denver Restaurant Week

So what place does Denver Restaurant Week have in a Boulder blog? Because several very good Boulder and area restaurants participate. This year the celebration will run from February 20th through March 1st, during which the restaurants will offer multi-course dinners for $30. Boulder participants include luminaries like Cafe Aion, Boulder Cork, and Salt Bistro, and usually some offer all savory courses, allowing my preference to skip dessert. These can be very popular, so it's always wise to make your reservations early. You can view the menu options on the Denver Restaurant Week site, limiting your search to location being Boulder, or by any other parameter of your choosing. Bon appetit.

Weekend Sales At Whole Foods

For tomorrow through Sunday, our local Whole Foods stores will offer us a quartet of special sales. Chocolov bars, ever a pre-Valentine's Day favorite will be three for $5, nearly half price, four inch pots of orchids are $12.99, $7 off, Siggi's yogurt cups are $1 each, and heads up, all hair care and color will be 25% off, even including serums.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

Good cold and a little snowy morning Boulder (although the snow should be brief and we'll be back close to 70 by Friday!). We have a new sale starting today at our Boulder Sprouts stores, while the current one continues at Whole Foods through February 10th. As for Vitamin Cottage, when I stopped by there last week, the long lasting Hotline sale still hadn't resumed, and customer service had no information about it, so can't help there. Here's what's looking good to me now.

While I usually focus on fish, meat, and organic produce, in Sprouts' new sale through February 11th, the news to me is the real arrival of the conventional asparagus from Mexico season, $1.48 a pound (last week's $1.99 was a pretty good harbinger of this). I see lots of pastas, risottos and stir frys with asparagus in my future this week. In meat and fish, all chicken sausage (pork also) are $3.99 a pound, whole or split chickens are $1.69 a pound (a little higher for cut up), Rosie Organic whole chickens are $2.99 a pound, and bone-in country style ribs and shoulder roast are also $2.99 a pound. (Maybe I should try to replicate Hosea Rosenberg's superb Hatch green chile posole with pork shoulder that I just had at his new restaurant Blackbelly this week.) Also, previously frozen Alaskan sockeye salmon fillets are $7.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, green curly kale and red or rainbow chards are all $1.50 a bunch, butternut and spaghetti squash are both 99 cents a pound, Gala and Granny Smith apples are both $1.50 a pound, one pound bags of baby carrots or celery bunches are both $1.50 each, Valencia oranges or grapefruit are both $2.50 a four pound bag, and grape tomatoes are $2.50 a pint. Elsewhere in the store, Qrunch quinoa burgers are $3.99 a four-pack (and they're really quite good), Fage Fruyo Greek yogurts are $1 each, some Amy's burritos are $2 each, some R.W. Knudsen organic juices are 35% off, smoked Gouda is $5.99 a pound, and Muir Glen pasta sauces are $2.50 a jar.

Valentine's Day Coming Up

February 14th will be upon us before you know it. Cooking at home can be far more romantic than the hassles of going out (especially landing on a Saturday this year), so if a home cooked dinner is on your radar, here are a few guides to help you out: Valentines Day from Epicurious, Valentine's Day Guide from Saveur magazine, and Three Romantic Valentine's Day Menus from Bon Appetit.

CSA Fair Coming Up

After last year's foray into joining Red Wagon Organic Farm's CSA, I'm totally a fan of the experience, and am already signed up with Red Wagon again for this year. If you are wanting to consider your CSA options, there will be a fair highlighting them on the 12th at Chautauqua's Community House. Here are the details from the Boulder Farmers' Market.

CSA Fair Thursday Feb. 12, 5-7pm in Boulder
Learn about 2015 community supported agriculture share options

Mark your calendars to join us for the CSA Fair in two weeks at the *Chautauqua Community House in Boulder on Thursday evening,February 12th from 5-7pmVisit with 10-12 Boulder County Farmers Markets vendors and learn about your options for community supported agriculture shares this year-everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to eggs, beef, flowers, and even preserved Colorado produce. Learn about what local farmers and producers are doing now to get ready for the growing season, and how your support with a CSA share will directly support their efforts.

And of course, it wouldn't be a farmers market event without some snacks and drinks! 3 Leaf Catering will generously be providing a few treats for us.

Last Day For Chicken Wing Buckets

Happy February already. Some people might be focused on a particular football game today, but for me, it's about today being the last day of Whole Foods' sale on chicken wing buckets for $7.99 each, $7 off. They have several varieties, but none is better to me than the classic Buffalo ones. If you're in a mood for making your own instead, Food and Wine magazine has a chicken wing recipe slideshow.
