Great Salmon Continues At Alfalfa's

And I can't get enough of it. Alfalfa's is doing their $14.99 a pound sale on king salmon again, this time through Friday, the 2nd.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have new sales starting today at our Boulder Sprouts and Whole Foods stores. There also should be something new happening at Vitamin Cottage, as their last sale ended last Saturday, but when I stopped by there a couple of days ago, the parking lot was a zoo, as usual. Anyway, here's what's looking good to me now.

At Sprouts through October 7th (where did the summer go), I'm liking boneless pork loin chops (roast also) at just $1.99 a pound, chicken breast tenders also $1.99 a pound, fresh ground chicken or pork $2.99 a pound, fresh farmed Atlantic salmon fillets $5.99 a pound, previously frozen raw wild 26/30 count shrimp $8.99 a pound, and fresh farmed tilapia $6.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, one pound bags of baby carrots are just 98 cents each, acorn, butternut or spaghetti squash are all 98 cents a pound, strawberries are $2.88 for a one pound container, and red, green or black seedless grapes and honeycrisp apples are all $2.48 a pound. It's a good time for organic everything at Sprouts, as they are doing an Organic Sale on all sorts of items throughout the store. I'm particularly liking six-ish ounce bags of Late July tortilla chips just $1.50 each, all Nature's Path products 40% off, Qrunch quinoa veggie burgers $3.50 a package, 16 ounce MaraNatha peanut butter $4.99 each, Muir Glen pasta sauce $2.99 a jar, and Back to Nature mac & cheese $1.50 a six ounce box (I've always liked Annie's for that, but I bet Back to Nature does a good one).

In the new sale at Whole Foods through October 13th, I'm liking organic fingerling potatoes from Colorado at $1.48 a pound, organic Fuji apples $1.69 a pound, Pine Manor's air-chilled whole chickens $1.99 a pound, and American Homestead's fine bone-in pork chops $5.99 a pound. Farmed Atlantic salmon fillets pose a dilemma - do you pay $5.99 a pound for them at Sprouts, or $10.99 a pound at Whole Foods, where they are "responsibly farmed" and the fish is always absolutely beautiful? Also at Whole Foods, I'm liking some DeLallo whole wheat pastas $2 a box (I so hope they have the fettucine, which can be hard to find), Brown Cow Greek yogurts $1 each, and Allegro organic espresso Bel Canto at $7.99 a pound for those caffeine fiends.

Time To Make Pesto!

Basil does not care for colder temperatures, and this upcoming weekend the lows are predicted to drop to around 40 degrees, not basil-friendly. With my plants looking more like bushes at this point, it's time to do a big round of pesto, to be divvied up in small containers for the freezer. Some people like to put it in ice cube trays, but I find the small deli containers from Whole Foods to be preferable. With a darkish, slightly rainy morning today, fall is upon us!

Happy National Coffee Day

Like you needed a reason to drink that cup of coffee. But it's also a reminder that you only have through tomorrow to enjoy those 25 cent cups of coffee Whole Foods has been practically giving away this month.

King Salmon At Alfalfa's

And I just saw on FB that Alfalfa's has king salmon for $14.99 a pound, $2 better than Whole Foods, ending today also. Didn't specify fresh, but I'd think so.

Last Day For Two Great Sales

Happy beautiful Sunday morning. It also happens to be the last day for two particularly good sales happening around here. The fresh wild king salmon fillets that Whole Foods has for $16.99 a pound through today were so spectacular from the grill last night, I just might have to pick up more today to use tomorrow. As an indicator of how good a deal this is, yesterday I was at the Boulder Farmers' Market at the fairgrounds in Longmont, and a vendor there was doing a good business selling frozen sockeye fillets at $15.99 a pound. Why buy frozen sockeye when you can get fresh king, the king of salmon, for $1 more?

It's also the last day for Alfalfa's sale on organic Full Circle Farms large (medium also) pumpkins for just $3 each. Again, at the Farmers' Market yesterday, I saw Full Circle was selling those large pumpkins at $8 each.

Carpe diem!

Boulder Farmers' Market Today

As the season starts to wind down (but still plenty left!), don't forget about the Boulder Farmers' Market today in downtown Boulder, and out at the county fairgrounds in Longmont. I hear the one in Longmont will include a table with a certain librarian from the Longmont Public Library early in the day, just from 8 to 10:30. Come on out, and here's what the Market says to expect on this beautiful fall day:

In Season Now

onions, butternut squash, pumpkins, sweet corn, apples, raspberries, garlic, tomatoes, summer squash, peppers, carrots, beets, eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe, potatoes, kale, chard, arugula, basil, and cut flowers.

Weekend Sales At Whole Foods

Whole Foods usually does a handful of special sales for the weekend, but this week they're listing a whopping ten special sales for tomorrow through Sunday, the 25th through 27th. The king salmon I mentioned yesterday is one of them, and there will be lots of specials on Paleo products, but with ten different sales (the Paleo specials counting only as one of those), I'd suggest you look for the three-day sales at the top of Whole Foods' list, rather than my trying to relay all of them here. And note that the content of that link will change over time. Right now you see the three-day specials for September 25th through 27th, but if you're looking at a later date, they'll have moved on to something else that's current.

Last Call For Vitamin Cottage Sale

Just a heads up that the current sale at Vitamin Cottage (aka Natural Grocers) runs through this Saturday, the 26th. Details from my prior post here. Bear in mind that stock of sale items tends to run low at the end of a sale, plus who knows what the next sale might bring us.

Fresh King Salmon At Whole Foods

Whole Foods will be at it again with another weekend sale on the finest fresh king salmon fillets for $16.99 a pound, this Friday through Sunday, September 25th through 27th. I know what will be going on my grill this weekend.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have new sales starting today at our Boulder Sprouts stores, while the current one continues at Whole Foods through September 29th, and at Vitamin Cottage just through this Saturday. Here's what's looking good to me now.

At Sprouts through September 30th, value packs of boneless skinless chicken breasts are just $1.88 a pound, their very good stuffed chicken breasts are $2.99 a pound (one breast easily serves two people), whole or split fresh chickens are $1.69 a pound, chicken Italian sausage (pork also) are $3.99 a pound, Rosie organic whole chickens are $2.99 a pound, and boneless ribeye steaks are $10.99 a pound. In fish, fresh farmed Atlantic salmon fillets are $6.99 a pound, and previously frozen wild Alaskan cod fillets are $7.99 a pound. For previously frozen raw shrimp, 31/40 count peeled and deveined shrimp are $9.99 a pound starting today, but if you are willing to do the peeling yourself and can do it today, I'd catch the bigger 26/30 count shell-on shrimp that are nearly half price at $6.99 a pound in the sale that ends today (both these shrimp are wild, not farmed).

In organic produce at Sprouts, green curly kale is just 98 cents a bunch, pints of grape tomatoes are $2.50 each, table carrots or russet potatoes are $2.98 for a five pound bag, and red, green or black seedless grapes are just $1.88 a pound (and grapes are something I'd only eat in organic, never conventional). Elsewhere in the store, I'm liking Fage Greek yogurts at $1 each, some five ounce bags of Boulder Canyon potato chips at an unusual "buy 1 get 2 free," some Pamela's cookies $2.50 a box (and they're showing that gluten free symbol), and some Cascadian Farm organic frozen items at 30% off. There's a "line drive" sale on Pacific brand at 30% off, plus an additional $3 off any five items. I think of that brand primarily for their broths, and I'm firmly in the Imagine organic broth camp, but the photo also includes many other Pacific products.

Yom Kippur Planning

Leave it to the New York Times to create an entire collection of recipes devoted to breaking the Yom Kippur fast Wednesday night. You can find the collection here. And by the way, that comes from NYT Cooking, an email service with great ideas, timely, seasonal, and gathered from some of the best minds in the business. I should do a post just about that some time.

New England Lobster Bliss In Denver

I recently had a chance to experience a rare bit of New England seafood bliss in this area, trying out the relatively new food truck called Lobster Bliss in Denver. Although only established I think in May, I've already seen them referred to as one of the best in the country, I forget if by Eater or by Zagat, and it has been on my radar ever since. They fly in live lobsters then store them in a special tank until their time comes. They offer both the more common cold lobster roll and the harder to find hot Connecticut-style one, and these are true lobster rolls, just big chunks of lobster, not the lobster salad rolls that sometimes give you more celery than anything else. And they sell for just $16 each, a steal considering they can be nearly twice that on the East Coast, even for ones filled with the salad version. It was about the freshest, most wonderful lobster roll I've ever had, including comparing with ones eaten on Block Island or Nantucket.

Check their website for locations and hours, but the short version is lunch at Civic Center Eats on Tuesdays, longer hours Saturdays at the Big Wonderful. We tried them at the Big Wonderful, which also amazed this New Englander with the added attraction of a bar area carrying craft beers from Cisco Brewery on Nantucket. This is a rare find indeed in the West!

Boulder Farmers' Market Today

We're still in that lovely end of summer time, when the produce is abundant and yummy (despite Whole Foods on Pearl having just changed its big "Local" produce display to a bunch of hard squash). Here's what the Boulder Farmers' Market says you can expect to find today:

In Season Now

sweet corn, raspberries, tomatoes, summer squash, peppers, carrots, beets, eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe, potatoes, onions, chard, green beans, basil, garlics, and cut flowers.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have new sales starting today at our Boulder Sprouts and Whole Foods stores, while the current one continues at Vitamin Cottage through September 26th (look a few posts below for that one). And I so wish I had time to include Lucky's Market, which I love, but the north Boulder store just isn't in my travel pattern, while the Longmont one, where I do tend to find myself, has quite different sales from the Boulder store. In any case, here's what's looking good to me now.

At Sprouts through September 23rd, bone-in country pork ribs are just $1.99 a pound, pork spare ribs are $2.99 a pound, and baby back ribs are $3.99 a pound (might need to do some cooler weather grilling this weekend). Whole Rosie organic chickens are $2.99 a pound, and 85% lean ground beef is $3.79 a pound, although that's for the value pack, so you have to like your burger in quantity. In fish, previously frozen 26/30 count wild raw shrimp are $6.99 a pound, and it's notable that those are wild, not farmed. I'd avoid the fresh farmed six ounce portions of Atlantic salmon they're selling for $4.99 each; do the math and you'll find that works out to a pretty darned high price for farmed salmon.

In organic produce at Sprouts, Diva apples are just 98 cents a pound, green curly or Lacinato kale are both 98 cents a bunch, one pound bags of baby orange carrots or 12 ounce ones of rainbow carrots are $1.48 each (I'll have to check out those rainbows), and red, green or black seedless grapes are all $2.48 a pound. Elsewhere in the store, it's time for another sale on Sprouts' own brand, with specials on a whole lot of their own products, and a particular emphasis on pumpkin ones at 25% off.

At Whole Foods through September 29th, sigh, it's already time for winter squash to be on sale at 98 cents a pound (that must be conventional since it doesn't specify), while organic gala apples are $1.68 a pound and organic Bartlett pears are $1.48 a pound (sounds a lot like fall, doesn't it). Delicious Parrano gouda is $12.99 a pound, In fish, fresh, responsibly farmed Arctic char is $14.99 a pound. MyChelle fans will enjoy MyChelle facial care at 20% off. I still swear Whole Foods new format for its online sale flyer lists considerably fewer specials than the old format, so there are fewer deals that jump out at me.

Rosh Hashanah Recipes

With Rosh Hashanah tonight, I'm a little late on this, but if you are looking for recipe ideas, check out these guides: What to Cook for Rosh Hashanah from Epicurious.com, and Rosh Hashana Recipes from the New York Times. With the Times spelling it without an h at the end, I suppose that's the more authoritative version.

Alfalfa's Beef Tenderloin Sale Today

Alfalfa's has organic, grass fed beef tenderloin for $14.99 a pound today, a whopping 60% off. The sale actually was a three-day one starting Friday, but I only saw it as one of those "sponsored" ads on Facebook, and couldn't confirm it elsewhere until I just saw an email about it from Alfalfa's.

Boulder Farmers' Market Today

Here's what you can expect to find at today's Boulder Farmers' Market, in addition to the big Pepper Fest to be held at the one in Longmont, mention in a post just below.

peppers, watermelon, peaches, cantaloupe, eggplant, tomatoes, sweet corn, carrots, summer squash, beets, potatoes, raspberries, kale, chard, green beans, artichokes, garlic, basil, and more.

Munson's To Continue

I was at the Munson farm stand at 75th and Valmont today for my usual hyper-fresh local corn fix, and they have a sweet chalkboard placed in front of the stand, thanking everyone for their kind words and condolences regarding Bob Munson. The board also notes that the Munson family tradition will continue, wonderful news for those of us who are addicted to that corn.

Whole Foods' Weekend Sales (Chicken Wings!)

Football season must be upon us, as Whole Foods is offering their famous chicken wing buckets at $12.99 each (didn't the sale price used to be $10.99?) from today through Sunday, a four-day sale. Also, in a three-day sale tomorrow through Sunday, select Mychelle facial regimen items will be 30% off.

Current Sale At Vitamin Cottage

In the current sale at Vitamin Cottage (aka Natural Grocers), I'm liking some Applegate organic sliced turkey or chicken breast packages (six ounces) at $5.29 each, Honest organic bottled iced teas at 99 cents each (although I generally make my own iced tea), some Rumiano organic cheeses at $2.99 for the six ounce package of slices and $3.89 for the half pound block, some Rudi's organic sandwich breads $3.99 a loaf, some Evol burritos $1.99 each, Clif or Luna bars 89 cents each (great for the runner in the family), some Cascadian Farm organic cereals or granolas $2.99 a box, and for my gluten-free friends, Udi's gluten-free sandwich breads or bagels $3.99 a package. And the yogurt scene is getting so competitive - Stonyfield Organic now has an Oh My Yog! trilayer yogurt with three layers of organic yogurt and fruit, offered at 99 cents each. Plus of course, there are tons of specials on supplements.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have a new sale starting today at our Boulder Sprouts stores, while the current one continues at Whole Foods through September 15th. I also have the new Vitamin Cottage flyer, more on that just as soon as I have time.

At Sprouts through September 16th, all sorts of fresh boneless chicken cuts are 50% off, whole or split chickens are $1.69 a pound, chicken sausage is $3.99 a pound, Rosie organic chicken grill packs are $3.49 a pound, fresh ground chicken, pork or chicken breast are all $2.99 a pound, and center-cut boneless pork loin chops (roast also) are $2.99 a pound as well. The fish selections aren't doing a lot for me this week, although fresh farmed Atlantic salmon fillets are $6.99 a pound.

In organic produce at Sprouts, some Earthbound farm salads are BOGO, table carrots are $2.98 for a five pound bag, eight ounce packages of whole Baby Bella or white mushrooms are $2.50 each, and red, green or black seedless grapes are $2.50 a pound. Elsewhere in the store, the big BOGO sale continues, with lots of products buy one, get one free. Just look for the BOGO signs, although when I was there yesterday and planned to stock up on Muir Glen organic canned tomatoes, that shelf had been decimated. Also of note, bulk coffee is a great deal at $6.99 a pound.

Article On Bob Munson

The Daily Camera finally got around to writing a full article on the remarkable life of Bob Munson. It was actually posted over the weekend, but this past weekend was a pretty busy one for me.

More Grilling Ideas

If you are looking far beyond hot dogs and burgers for your grilling as this Labor Day weekend comes to a close, check out the guides I posted just below, and add in this particularly interesting one. The ever-sophisticated and globally-inclined Saveur magazine has a collection of Global Grilling Recipes with the caption, "Nothing is more universal than cooking over an open flame." That caption captures everything I just love about Saveur.

Grilling Guides Reminder

Happy halfway through this Labor Day weekend, with some leaves on my trees already turning an ominous yellow. Before we head into the depths of winter's butternut squash territory, if you are still looking for ideas for your summery weekend festivities, here's a reminder of the grilling guides post  I did a while ago.

Boulder Farmers' Market Today

What better way to kick off a lovely, but maybe a bit breezy, Labor Day weekend than with the Boulder Farmers' Market downtown, 8 am to 2 pm? (Also at the fairgrounds in Longmont, think that one closes at 1.) Here's what the Market says to expect (maybe the last week for peaches!), so you'll find plenty of veggies to add to your Labor Day grill.

In Season Now

watermelon, peaches (maybe the last week!), cantaloupe, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, sweet corn, carrots, summer squash, beets, potatoes, raspberries, kale, chard, green beans, garlic, basil, and more.

Tribute To Bob Munson

There's a touching tribute to Bob Munson in today's Daily Camera. Sorry I can't link to it, as it was placed by members of FIRST RF Corporation, rather than being a regular feature article. Bob evidently had a vast legacy in high technology, in addition to being a local legend as a farmer and family man. What a life.

Exceedingly Sad News

Today's Daily Camera is reporting the following. "Robert E. Munson, 74, of Munson Farms passed away on August 31, 2015 at Boulder Community Health." This is crushing news. Bob Munson was such a vibrant part of our local food community, and it seems only yesterday that I'd see him at the farm stand, and his wife at my gym. So very, very sad.

One-Day Sale At Whole Foods Today

For today only, the 2nd, Whole Foods has shrimp California rolls for $3.99 each.

This Week's Hot Grocery Deals (IMHO)

We have a new sale starting today at our Boulder Sprouts stores, while the current one continues at Whole Foods through September 15th (look several posts below for that one). Here's what's looking good to me now.

At Sprouts through September 9th, they'll prep your Labor Day grill with baby back ribs $2.99 a pound, value packs of boneless skinless chicken breasts just $1.88 a pound, all chicken sausage (pork also) $3.99 a pound, boneless ribeye steaks $12.99 a pound, their own stuffed chicken breasts $2.99 a pound, and there's a Buffalo Stampede sale on all sorts of bison. In fish, fresh wild Alaskan coho salmon fillets are just $7.99 a pound, previously frozen 21/25 count raw ez peel shrimp are $5.99 a pound, and those yummy (previously frozen) stuffed clams, scallops or crab are all just $1 each - super easy appetizer.

In conventional produce at Sprouts, Hass avocados are 49 cents each, not as good as last weekend's special sale, but still pretty good. Olathe sweet corn is four for $1, but Whole Foods is also doing corn at four for $1, and last week I found they had ultra-local Munsons at that price. In organic produce, red or green seedless grapes are just $1.88 a pound, grape tomatoes are $2.50 a pint, yellow peaches or nectarines are $2.50 a pound (put some on the grill!), and Bartlett pears are just 98 cents a pound.

Elsewhere in the store at Sprouts, the news is a big BOGO sale, with lots and lots of products buy one, get one free. BOGOs catching my eye in the ad include Green Mountain Creamery Greek yogurts (very good stuff, and most are only 110 calories), the 15-ish ounce size of Muir Glen tomatoes, Barbara's cereals, Near East rice, quinoa or couscous, Delallo whole wheat pastas, Back to Nature crackers, and Annie's mac & cheese ("select varieties" on all of those).

Labor Day Approaching

The long Labor Day Weekend is almost upon us, and from a culinary standpoint, that pretty much means grilling. If you are looking for some new ideas, here's a link to some guides I did in a prior post about Memorial Day, which is pretty much about the same thing. Happy grilling!

Farm Dinner Coming Up

Happy September already. Time to enjoy a farm dinner celebrating the day's harvest. Here are the details from the Boulder Farmers' Market, and Dakota Soifer is a great chef.
