Truly Natural Turkey
I've previously alluded many times to the variables involved in "natural" meats, a very confusing and slippery area. Alfalfa's meat manager has this very good post outlining what you should see on the label if you want your turkey to be truly natural. You'll find such fine birds at some other stores, in addition to Alfalfa's, but the post gives you excellent information about what to look for.

Great work, Eileen! Thanks for tracking down this very clear information, which so many of us have had questions about. That answers it, doesn't it? As we suspected, there is no free lunch!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, Ms. A. You get what you pay for and have to make your own, well informed decisions as to what that should be.
ReplyDeleteAn addendum - I'm wondering if I should be eating my words, in addition to some turkey, this week. There is a sign near the meat department at our Boulder Sprouts detailing the virtues of their fresh turkeys, and among other things, this official sign proclaims "Raised right - free roaming on vegetarian feed and well water, with no antibiotics." While the lack of antibiotics is not noted on the turkey label, perhaps some marketing person decided that was unappealing to mention for most people? If true, the Sprouts price of $1.49 a pound, which they note is $1 off, would be quite the bargain, as a $2.49 price would seemingly be right in line with Alfalfa's and Whole Foods for such a bird. Hmmm.
