Looking Forward To Temple Oranges
Sorry, but this is about as close as I can get to the orange and blue Broncos fever that is sweeping the state on this playoff Sunday. The current issue of Saveur magazine reports that it is worth keeping an eye out for temple oranges, which have a very short season, from about late January through February. Sounds like they might be the next satsuma craze, and I bet Whole Foods will have them. Saveur describes them thus: "a cross between mandarin and sweet oranges, the super juicy temple is more complex than your standard navel orange, clipping to the tarter side." Saveur notes that the rumor the name derives from an obscure Buddhist sect is not true, but rather is a reference to William Chase Temple, a former Florida Citrus Exchange executive. I kind of prefer the obscure Buddhist sect idea myself.
